Many studies, including by the federal government, prove that while these algorithms are able to correctly identify middle-aged, white men relatively well, their error rates are much higher with women, children, people of color, and specifically Black people.\u00a0<strong>And, even if the biases weren\u2019t written into the actual programming of the technology, they are disproportionately used to target and surveil Black and Brown communities, limiting people\u2019s freedom of speech.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"EFF About Face\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/EFF-About-Face-3.jpg\" alt=\"EFF About Face\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"15\" vspace=\"2\" \/>These major wins came after years of\u00a0<strong>organizing and pressure from privacy protection and civil rights enforcement organizations, like our longtime grantees Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC).\u00a0<\/strong>These organizations are working to\u00a0<strong>protect civil liberties and privacy, and correct course before it is too late.\u00a0<\/strong>Echa un vistazo\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/aboutface\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFF\u2019s About Face<\/a>\u00a0campaign and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/epic.org\/banfacesurveillance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EPIC\u2019s international Ban Face Surveillance campaign<\/a>\u00a0to learn more about their work.<br \/>\nWith our country\u2019s recent attention on the Black Lives Matter movement and systemic racism,\u00a0<strong>companies and governments are recognizing their responsibility for the racism perpetuated by this technology, particularly in the hands of police.<\/strong>\u00a0As Kade Crockford, Director of the ACLU writes,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>\u201cBanning face surveillance won\u2019t stop systemic racism, but it will take one powerful tool away from institutions that are responsible for upholding it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/news\/privacy-technology\/how-is-face-recognition-surveillance-technology-racist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more about the ways these technologies\u2019 biases perpetuate racism from the ACLU.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We have proudly supported both EFF and EPIC through our\u00a0<strong>Consumer Privacy Rights Fund.\u00a0<a href=\"\/es\/fondo-para-el-derecho-a-la-intimidad-del-consumidor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00e1s informaci\u00f3n sobre el Fondo en nuestro sitio web<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last few months, you may have seen\u00a0facial recognition in the news as cities, states, and tech companies have&hellip;<\/p>","protected":false},"featured_media":4112,"template":"","format":[],"categories":[71],"tags":[],"topic":[],"class_list":["post-4887","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-grantee-spotlightnews-features"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Facial Recognition, Privacy, &amp;
