\"Incubating<\/a><\/p>\n

When we launched our\u00a0Grassroots Leadership Fund<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(GLF) last fall, we had\u00a0two major goals: to channel funding to groups\u00a0<\/strong>around the country that are\u00a0building community resilience by addressing urban flooding<\/strong>; and\u00a0to support these grantees in building their organizations<\/strong>, so they can thrive and grow long after our grant dollars are spent.\u00a0Key to thriving as a nonprofit is raising enough money to support and sustain the work. So,\u00a0we strive to teach our grantees how to “crack the code”<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0connect with big foundations<\/strong> that can give them much larger grants than we can\u00a0here at the Rose Foundation. To this end, we offer training and practical experiences to teach grassroots activists how to craft polished grant applications that can be competitive against applications from larger and more resourced organizations in a foundation’s grant review.<\/p>\n

Last week, we hosted a\u00a0Reality Grantmaking workshop<\/strong>\u00a0for our GLF grantees. This workshop gave grantees the chance to\u00a0submit grant proposals for live and direct feedback from a panel of judges<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 including\u00a0Pam Allen from the Lisa & Douglas Goldman Fund; Jalonne White-Newsome from the Kresge Foundation; and Brian Zongolowicz from the Satterberg Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 all of whom are program officers from large endowed foundations. As\u00a0Executive Director Tim Little explained<\/strong>\u00a0at the workshop,<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve done this reality grantmaking process about a dozen times over the past 20 years. It\u2019s always great to hear from different program officers who share their personal lenses<\/em>\u201d to get a sense of how your proposal might be received by different foundations.<\/p>\n

All seven\u00a0<\/strong>grantee groups that\u00a0submitted proposals<\/strong>\u00a0for the workshop received participation awards\u00a0<\/b>in recognition of how challenging and vulnerable it can be to have their grant proposals picked apart in front of an audience. And at the end of the workshop, our esteemed panel of judges picked\u00a0one proposal for the $1,000 grand prize!<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the workshop,\u00a0the judges reviewed finalist proposals<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0A Community Voice<\/a>,\u00a0Community In-Power Development Association Inc<\/a>,\u00a0Greater Treme Consortium<\/a>, and\u00a0Hollygrove Neighbors Association<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>The judges shared their insights with the group, outlining each of the proposals’\u00a0strengths\u00a0<\/strong>and pointing out some\u00a0areas for improvement.<\/strong>\u00a0And then, our grantees had the opportunity for some\u00a0Q&A with our panel.<\/strong>\u00a0Throughout the workshop, our panel\u00a0emphasized the importance of following all instructions\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 \u201cDon’t let\u00a0yourself get kicked out on a technicality early on in the process<\/em>,\u201d as Executive Director Tim Little explained. The panel also\u00a0highlighted how critical it is to provide a clear, line-by-line budget in a grant proposal.<\/strong>\u00a0And the judges pointed to the\u00a0value of telling your story<\/strong>\u00a0through your background, accomplishments, and the context of your community to really center the reader and make them care about your work.<\/p>\n

Our workshop ended with one piece of advice from each of our judges:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cPut your passion on paper.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnderstand the prompt\u00a0and ask questions to understand it further. You want to have a clear sense of your audience and what you’re writing for.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBe yourself and be honest. We [program officers] are human; we do this work because we care about it too!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

This workshop was a powerful way to \u201cdemystify foundation funding<\/em>,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as Program Officer Aurora Heying reflects.
