Como becaria del programa \u00abFood Justice\u00bb de este a\u00f1o, estoy intentando mejorar el acceso a alimentos frescos y saludables en las comunidades que se enfrentan a obst\u00e1culos para obtenerlos. Aqu\u00ed, en Oakland, promover la justicia alimentaria implica abordar el\u00a0apartheid alimentario<\/strong>\u00a0a las que se enfrentan nuestras comunidades \u2014 o\u00a0las razones por las que a algunas personas se les impide acceder a alimentos frescos, saludables y asequibles en funci\u00f3n de su nivel econ\u00f3mico y del barrio en el que viven.<\/strong>\u00a0Vemos c\u00f3mo se manifiesta el \u00abapartheid alimentario\u00bb cuando las tiendas de alimentaci\u00f3n est\u00e1n situadas lejos de las comunidades de personas de color y de los barrios con bajos ingresos, o cuando los alimentos saludables que hay cerca son demasiado caros para que los miembros de la comunidad puedan permit\u00edrselos.<\/p>\n

Como parte de mi proyecto, estoy ayudando a otros tres estudiantes de secundaria de la zona de Oakland a crear sus propios huertos dom\u00e9sticos para reducir el nivel de \u00abapartheid alimentario\u00bb que sufrimos.\u00a0<\/strong>A trav\u00e9s de este proyecto, los alumnos desempe\u00f1ar\u00e1n un papel activo en la transformaci\u00f3n de nuestro sistema alimentario y tendr\u00e1n acceso a alimentos frescos y saludables. Y, a diferencia de muchos supermercados de Oakland, el precio no ser\u00e1 un factor determinante.<\/p>\n

Pero antes incluso de empezar a planificar los huertos dom\u00e9sticos, debemos realizar algunos an\u00e1lisis del suelo para detectar la presencia de plomo. Aunque ya no se utiliza pintura con plomo ni gasolina con plomo, muchos de nuestros jardines siguen sufriendo las consecuencias de ese \u201clegado de plomo\u201d.\u201d <\/strong>Para esta parte de mi proyecto, estoy colaborando con la East Bay Academy for Young Scientists (EBAYS) para analizar nuestras muestras de suelo. Los resultados de los an\u00e1lisis nos permitir\u00e1n comprender mejor si es seguro cultivar alimentos en el suelo que rodea nuestras casas. Estos resultados tambi\u00e9n pueden ayudarnos a debatir los efectos de la exposici\u00f3n prolongada al plomo en nuestra salud y en nuestras plantas.<\/p>\n

Cuando le pregunt\u00e9 a una de las alumnas de mi grupo, Jasmine, c\u00f3mo podr\u00edan cambiar los resultados su perspectiva sobre el suelo que la rodea, me respondi\u00f3: \u201cInfluir\u00e1 en mi decisi\u00f3n de si quiero utilizar el suelo si no est\u00e1 contaminado, o buscar una forma de eliminar las toxinas y luego proceder a plantar\u201d. En caso de que descubramos niveles peligrosos de contaminaci\u00f3n por plomo, estoy buscando otras opciones, incluidos programas que se encarguen de retirar y sustituir el suelo contaminado por nosotros.<\/p>\n

Desde que empec\u00e9 este proyecto, he realizado mis propios an\u00e1lisis del suelo de mi jard\u00edn.\u00a0Cuando recib\u00ed los resultados, me qued\u00e9 muy sorprendido al ver lo alta que era la concentraci\u00f3n de plomo en mi suelo.<\/strong>\u00a0Me alegro mucho de saber esto ahora y de tener otras opciones (como los bancales elevados) para cultivar mi propio huerto de forma segura.<\/p>\n

En los pr\u00f3ximos meses, terminar\u00e9 mi taller sobre an\u00e1lisis de suelos con los alumnos y analizaremos sus resultados.
