Los jóvenes latinos comparten un recorrido por los Parques Nacionales y la necesidad de una mayor protección

While celebrations can take different forms, several Latino youth from the Indio, CA area got back to basics in early Nov. 2014 as they hiked and camped throughout the California desert and wilderness — Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve — to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the California Desert Protection Act and the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. While hiking multiple locations, hearing from local experts and sleeping in tents, the youth reflected on the role Latinos play as stewards of the desert.

Overview of Get Wild At 50

2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Across the nation, more than 300 events were planned in gateway communities, state capitols, universities, Washington DC, and in other communities where wilderness is valued. Here in California, more than a dozen events aimed at commemorating this landmark law are already in the planning stage.

Rose Foundation’s Fondo Grassroots California Wildlands was created 12 years ago to support grassroots activism in support of wilderness, open space, wildlands and habitat. As an adjunct to our 2014 grantmaking, we created a special Get Wild At 50: Celebrating 50 Years of the Wilderness Act grantmaking program to support community-based Wilderness Act celebrations and events across the state of California.
